简介:Abstract
History of gas turbine engines: A number of different applications of the gas turbine engine are introduced.  Explained that how each application has evolved and is continued to evolve from 1930th to the present days, particularly in aero and industrial applications.  Presented from early technical breakthrough in military aero engine application to more recent civil aviation development.  Because of the high energy demand and the green-house gas reduction effort worldwide, discuss how the industrial gas turbine design has evolved and where it is heading.  Explain why some of the applications have been discontinued.  With timelines, technological advances in various gas turbine applications are also briefly discussed.
Comparison of aero and industrial gas turbine engines: Aero engine has gone through a technical revolution particularly from 1960 to 1990.  However, the industrial engine lagged in advancement till 1990s.  Although many of the technologies from aero engine may be applicable to industrial engine in most part, development engineers face different requirements and solutions.  Industrial engine design is optimized for durability first and then cost.  Over last 20 some years, significant technical investigations were conducted in industrial gas turbine development in addition to technology transfer from aero engine.  These technological progresses are presented, and the remaining future needs are discussed.
Recent technological development and trend in gas turbine designs: The technical advances in the last ten or less years are discussed.  Some of the advances are motivated by worldwide efforts in minimization of the global warming and in maximization of the economic benefit.  Will be discussed in the advances and interests in the areas of turbine aero, heat transfer, combustion, and material.  But some of the advances are due to the technical breakthrough in manufacturing technologies such as additive manufacturing (3D printing).  It is discussed what those technologies and how they are affecting the modern gas turbine designs.  It is also discussed what are the limiting factors that holding the practical applications from the products.
