Abstract: The reduction of climate-damaging CO2 poses a challenge for our entire planet. In order to make a real contribution to climate protection, it is important not only to pursue different approaches to avoid CO2, but also to use CO2 as raw material in catalytic processes. In Germany’s Energiewende, the power-to-gas concept, in which “green” hydrogen is converted with CO2 into water and methane, could make an important contribution here, especially as the methane produced can be used as a chemical energy carrier. Moreover, methanol – produced by catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 – is a starting material for the production of olefins, exemplarily of propene (MTP process). The lecture by Prof. Hinrichsen provides insights into the current state of research performed in his research group for the development of catalysts and designing catalytic processes starting from CO2 as raw material.
