The Royal Society has been publishing scientific journals since 1665. Our prestigious journals cover the range of the physical and life sciences, and publish work from authors around the world, including a great many authors from China. But what is the journey of a manuscript from its initial submission to acceptance? What do we do as a publisher and how can authors maximise the likelihood that their work will be published? This talk will provide an overview of how the Royal Society journals operate, and how we can help you publish with us.

Andrew Dunn has worked in STEM scholarly publishing for most of the last 11 years, starting out with the life and biomedical science publisher Faculty of 1000, working for their literature evaluation service. Since April 2015, Andrew has worked for Royal Society Publishing, initially managing the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A, before taking on his current role with the journal Royal Society Open Science, which is the newest of the Royal Society’s journals. Royal Society Open Science incorporates a range of open science features (including open peer review, open data, open access, and objective peer review), and covers the full range of the sciences, mathematics and engineering. As Senior Publishing Editor for Royal Society Open Science, Andrew has managed the introduction of Replication studies as an article type, implemented mandatory publishing of peer review information, and introduced article processing charges at the journal to ensure its sustainability.
