讲座简介Abstract:

The field of engineering education continues to suffer from a lack of research on professional engineering work practices. This gap is troubling because engineering education is organized and reorganized based on claims about what professional engineering work is or will be. Without well-researched and trustworthy representations of practice, it is questionable whether engineering educators can adequately prepare future engineers for workplace realities. With these issues in mind, this presentation begins with a review of significant findings from prior studies of engineering practice. It then turns to discuss what these findings might mean for rethinking how we educate engineers.  Special attention is paid to comparing engineering education to other kinds of professional training. Finally, the paper proposes an agenda for future research on engineering practice, including important topic areas and research method innovations.
