Large scale assembly of nanomaterials is important for practical applications. I will introduce a new method developed in collaboration with Harvard University (Charles Lieber group) for assembly of nanostructures efficiently over large scale, with potential of industrial production, which we call "the blown bubble film approach". A bubble was blown from a nanomaterial-loaded polymer solution, and the bubble films were transferred to substrates with aligned nanowires/tubes at controlled density. This is a general approach that applies to a variety of nanowires (semiconducting or luminescent) and also carbon nanotubes (multi-walled or single-walled), as demonstrated in this presentation. Photopolymers were also introduced to make bubble films that facilitates subsequent lithography process. Large arrays of field effect transistors based on assembled nanowires have been demonstrated.
