Materiomics, Dealing with Complexity in Tissue Engineering (Clemens A. van Blitterswijk, Professor of University of Twente, Netherlands)

It is a challenge to engineer complex tissues (i.e bone) using stem cells. This lecture addresses the complexity in tissue engineering and the approaches to make functional tissue-engineered tissues/organs. Firstly the role of scaffolding materials in tissue engineering is described and the concept of instructive materials is introduced. Then the choices of cells for tissue engineering are discussed, followed by the gene manipulating of cells. Subsequently novel growth factors are presented. And finally the importance of angiogenesis and how to engineer vascular system using tissue engineering technique are highlighted.
