New Approaches to Bone Regeneration (Joost D. de Bruijn, Professor of Queen Mary University of London,United Kingdom and CEO of Progentix Orthobiology BV, Netherlands)
The use of bone marrow derived progenitor- or stem cells for functional bone tissue engineering has received much attention as an alternative to autologous bone grafting. Besides addressing tissue-engineered bone, this lecture introduces a novel approach of replacing autologous bone with osteoinductive synthetics for bone regeneration. An overview is provided on the unique biological properties of osteoinductive synthetics with respect to their physicochemical properties as well as their use as a tissue engineering scaffold. At the end the potentials to regenerate bone with osteoinductive synthetics are outlined. |
