The recent rapid progress in semiconductor photon sensor technology, in particular the Solid State PM (SSPM) array with comparable performance to multi-channel PMT but much compact size, has provided new opportunities and challenges to the instrumentation development for PET and SPECT applications. This presentation will introduce some latest technical progress in SSPM, the performance and potential for medical imaging applications for emission tomography. The preliminary performance measurement of a SSPM array and the initial development of a new scintillation detector based on this device will be reported. In addition, the progress in using a position-sensitive avalanche photodiode for gamma ray detection will also be discussed.
