The recent advances of various optical technologies have opened the new field, Optical Molecular Imaging (OMI), which followed the completion of the human genome project. OMI covers extremely the wide range of space and times of various biological processes: those are from nm to cm in size, picosecond to second in time, and single molecule to complex molecular assembly in the tissue and even in the whole body , respectively.
Technically, optical microscope, endoscope, small animal imaging and brain or breast imaging of human body by diffuse optical tomography (DOT) are the typical representatives of these widespread methods and targets.
In this talk, the recent topics of optical imaging carried out in the laboratories of Hokkaido University together with several companies will be given as follows: (1) the microscope technology of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and cross correlation spectroscopy (FCCS) for the analysis of the dynamic behavior of fluorescent labeled proteins inside the live cells; (2) the multifunctional endoscope systems with the auto-fluorescence imaging and microscopic observations; (3) the multi-channel optical imaging systems by the near infrared light ( functional near-infrared spectroscopy, fNIRS ), which are now widely used for the functional imaging of human brain activity under the various tasks. |
