ABSTRACT
CO2 emission is thought to be the key factor of climate change because of its largest emission and greatest total global warming potential. To reduce CO2 emission, therefore, is thought to be an effective way to control the emission of greenhouse gases. Professor Olav Bolland will give us an outlook for advanced capture technology.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Olav Bolland is Professor of Thermal Power Engineering in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His research includes a large range of power cycle modelling and simulations, with pre- and post-combustion methods as well as oxy-fuel combustion cycles. The methodologies are both theoretical and experimental. The theoretical work includes cycle design with a several state-of-the-art software tools, transient modelling and simulation using the tool gPROMS (PSE, Ltd.), methodology related to generalisation of efficiency penalty in CO2 capture, and exergy analysis for pre-combustion methods. The experimental work is within so-called “Chemical Looping Combustion,” where the kinetics of oxidation and reduction of Ni/NiO is studied in two experimental set-ups. He has been active in this area since 1989. Other fields of interest and research include power generation with CO2 capture; gas turbines and gas turbine power plants (design and operation); solid oxide fuel cells – modelling and simulation, and particle technology. He was Lead Author for the IPCC’s Special report on CO2 Capture and Storage, which was published in 2005. Since 2005, he has been a Member of the Advisory Board for the international research project CCP2 and CCP3 (Carbon Capture Project) and since 2006, he has been Associate Editor for the Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. Also since 2006 he has been an elected member of The Norwegian Academy of Technical Sciences (NTVA). Since 2008 Bolland is the director of the Gas Technology Centre NTNU-SINTEF, and since 2009 he is the head of the Department of Energy and Process Engineering at NTNU.
