Global energy demand will increase by almost 35% between now and the year 2030. This growth will be lead by a rapid expansion of demand non-OECD countries. Power generation will be the fastest growing segment which will account for 40% of the energy demand. Growth in renewable fuels will continue at relatively high rates but oil and gas will remain essential with an increasing need to economically develop frontier resources. Technologies that are required for development of these energy supplies are as diverse as the resources themselves. In this presentation we will explore the global energy demand, highlight several technical challenges faced including the implication of reducing the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

Michael is the Upstream Director at ExxonMobil Corporate Strategic Research in Annandale, NJ. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences in 1981 from the University of Texas at Arlington for work in iterative methods of the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. He began his career at Mobil Research and Development Corporation in Dallas where he developed the solvers used in Mobil's first compositional reservoir simulator and subsequently he led the development of Mobil's basin simulator.
He has held various Geoscience leadership positions. He served as Mobil's Upstream Strategic Research Manager prior to the merger of Exxon and Mobil and stewarded a number of global, leveraged R&D efforts. At the merger, he joined the Upstream Research Company where he was responsible for Upstream research computing, technical software development and ExxonMobil’s Upstream Breakthrough research programs. He served as the Chairman of the 2001 United Way Campaign for the Houston-based research and computing service organizations.
Michael assumed his current position in 2006. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic research programs and initiatives at Corporate Strategic Research related to the Upstream Business. He represents ExxonMobil as Chair of the Steering Committee for the Conference Board’s Council on Innovation. He was named a Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2009 |
