Deformed by both tidal force and rotational effects, planets are usually in the shape of an ellipsoid. Gravitational interaction between a planet and its parent star forces planetary precession and libration. Fluid motion in the deep planetary interior, driven by planetary precession and libration, may generate and maintain planetary magnetic fields. We shall present the mathematical theory of precessionally or librationally driven flows by considering a viscous, incompressible fluid confined in an ellipsoidal planet which is precessing or librating. We shall also present direct numerical simulation of the same problem using an EBE (Element-By-Element) finite element method, showing a satisfactory agreement between the analytical solution and the nonlinear numerical simulation. |
