I will give an account of a class of quantum lattice spin models with topological order based on Hopf algebras. These models are built following Kitaev's lattice implementation of the quantum double construction. The algebraic language reveals a very simple structure in the tensor network structure of ground states. A hierarchy of states obtained by symmetry breaking is discussed.
