Lecture at Tsinghua University by Prof. Dennis A. Carson

 

 

 

Dennis A. Carson教授于1970年获哥伦比亚大学医学博士学位。 1971-1975年先后于美国Salk研究院、美国国立关节炎、代谢和消化系疾病研究所、加州大学圣地亚哥分校进行博士后研究。1976-1990年历任美国Scripps临床和研究中心助理教授、副教授、教授。1990年至今就职于加州大学圣地亚哥分校医学院教授，2004年---2011年担任加州大学圣地亚哥分校医学院副院长、Moores癌症研究中心主任、Chugai Pharmaceutical Chair in Cancer讲席教授。在包括顶级的Science，Nature，PNAS，Cancer Cell，J Clin Invest等国际刊物发表文章500余篇，拥有美国专利80余项。发明的抗毛细胞白血病药物Cladribine是世界上唯一用药一周痊愈的抗白血病药物，新近研发的抗肿瘤抗体免疫和分子药物正在或即将进入临床研究。是Vical、三角制药、Dynavax、Salmedix、Telormedix、Wintherix等著名生物医药公司的创始人之一。曾获得Lee C. Howley Sr.奖、Mayo-Soley奖、AACR-Bruce F. Cain纪念奖、Chester Stock奖、BIOCOM 生命科学继承奖等多个奖项，先后当选美国AAAS、NAS、IOM三院院士。

Cancer is becoming the leading cause of death as the population ages. New medicines for cancer can slow down the course of the disease, but do not cure it. This may be because cancers contain abnormal cells called cancer stem cells, that are similar to embryonic cells, and are resistant to conventional treatments. Our laboratory has been searching for molecular differences between cancer stem cells and normal adult cells that can be exploited for new treatments. We have identified embryonic proteins, and signaling pathways, that are highly expressed in some cancers, compared to normal cells. Cancer cells expressing the embryonic proteins can be destroyed by the immune system, without harming the body. A combination of immune therapy and drug therapy, aimed at cancer stem cells, may offer a new and effective therapeutic strategy in cancer.
