布坎南先生曾任美国农业部副部长（主管科研、教育和经济）,首席科学家, 乔治亚大学美国乔治亚大学农业与环境科学学院名誉院长
1962年毕业于佛罗里达大学，获农业经济学硕士学位。于1965年爱荷华洲州立大学获植物生理学博士学位。之后在澳本大学农业经济和土壤系任教。
1980年10月-1985年9月：阿拉巴马州农业实验站任站长
1986年4月-1994年5月：乔治亚农业实验站副站长兼海岸平原实验站站长
1994年6月-1995年2月：乔治亚农业实验站代理站长
1995年3月-2006年5月：农业和环境科学院院长
2006年5月-2009年12月：美国农业部副部长（主管科研、教育和经济）首席科学家

Former USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics
Dr. Gale Buchanan
Dr. Buchanan spent the first 21 years of his professional career with Auburn University in the Department of Agronomy and Soils, with primary teaching and research responsibilities in weed science. He served as Dean and Director of the Alabama  Agricultural Experiment Station from October 1, 1980 to September 30, 1985. On April 14, 1986, he was appointed Associate Director of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations and Resident Director of the Coastal Plain Experiment Station. He served as Interim Director of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations from June, 1994 to February, 1995. He became Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences March 1, 1995 up to 2006. He served as USDA-Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics and the Chief Scientist of USDA from 2006 to 2009. Currently, he is the Dean and Director Emeritus,College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences,University of Georgia

Dr. Gale Buchanan received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agronomy from the University of Florida in 1959 and 1962, respectively, and the Ph.D. in Plant Physiology, with minors in Botany and Agronomy, from Iowa State University in 1965.

中美生物燃料联合研究中心简介
中美生物燃料联合研究中心由中国科技部于2010年5月批准成立。致力于开发清洁能源，以解决能源危机与雾霾问题，促进经济转型。研究方向是生物能源与化工，涵盖菌种菌群筛选、驯化、与基因工程改造，过程模拟以及发酵工程放大。通过工程技术将微生物学、化学、颗粒运动学集成。
在科技部等部委的支持下，本中心的甜高粱秆先进固体发酵（ASSF）产乙醇技术取得突破，连续固体发酵装置（3.6×55米）在内蒙鄂尔多斯成功运行；成功构建了利用木糖发酵产乙醇的基因工程细菌Zymomonasmobilis，筛选到完全降解纤维素菌群；开发甜高粱秆固体蒸馏联产纤维素乙醇工艺。在Biotechnology for Biofuels、Applied Energy等期刊上发表论文60余篇，申请专利30项，12项获授权。成为国际领先的生物燃料人才培养基地。
