Prof. Jun Ni, born in 1961, is the Shien-Ming Wu Collegiate Professor of Manu-facturing Science and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, USA. He serves as the founding Dean of the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute located in Shanghai, China. He is also the director of the S. M. Wu Manufacturing Research Center and the co-director of a National Science Foundation sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems at the University of Michigan. He also served as the Deputy Director of a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems.
 
Selected honors and awards that Professor Ni received include 2013 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, 2013 S. M. Wu Research Implementation Award from Society of Manufacturing Engineers and North American Manufacturing Research Institute, 2010 Magnolia Gold Medal awarded by Shanghai Municipal Government for Outstanding Contribution by Oversea Scientist, 2009 William T. Ennor Manufacturing Technology Award from American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), which is one of the most prestigious awards in manufacturing, Fellow of ASME and of Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), 1994 Presidential Faculty Fellows Award from President Bill Clinton, and 1991 Outstanding Manufacturing Engineers Award from SME.
 
Prof. Ni has been very active in conducting manufacturing research while at the same time serving as the director of S. M. Wu Manufacturing Research Center at the University of Michigan. This research center has been internationally recognized for its creative research in manufacturing science and engineering, and for its impact on industrial implementations. Many graduate students have received balanced training in conducting fundamental academic research and applying their results to industry.
