  简介:

High-index-contrast (3.5:1) in silicon photonics enables submicron light confinement in waveguides and low-loss sharp bends with radii of only a few micrometers.  Since past several years, the propagation loss in silicon waveguide has gained extensive attention in the community.  In this talk, I will discuss our work on highly compact (radii ≤ 10 mm) silicon microring resonators, where we demonstrate a lowest propagation loss down to 1.7 dB/cm and high quality-factor up to 500,000 with small mode volumes of tens of (l/ne)3.  Our results bring interesting applications of these silicon resonators in areas including low-power nonlinear optics (light control light), modulator, bio sensing, add-drop filtering and optical pulse shaper, etc.

Optical frequency comb generator (OFCG) is a Fabry-Pérot (F-P) electro-optic modulator, where a high-speed electro-optic phase modulator is placed inside a high-finesse F-P cavity for strong resonant enhanced modulation.  In this talk, I will discuss our work on an OFCG operating at the fiber telecommunication band, which is capable of generating 10 GHz optical frequency combs with a frequency span over 5 THz.  The residual timing jitter of 10 GHz pulses from the OFCG was minimized to only several femtoseconds.  We demonstrate a minimum pulse width of 0.4-0.6 picosecond.
