canning probe microscope (SPM) has opened the door to interrogate and manipulate a wide range of matters at submicron- to nano- scale. With the hardware and software advances, SPM technology has been dramatically improved in terms of its functionality and application areas. Currently, however, SPM is still bottlenecked by its low speed of operation. Such low speed of SPM not only renders the measurement and/or imaging a time consuming process, but more fundamentally, induces large temporal errors when measuring rapid dynamic phenomena such as the mechanical properties of cell membrane during cell migration, and the rate-dependent vioscoelastic properties of soft materials like polymer. The first half of this talk will discuss from control viewpoint the challenges in achieving high-speed SPM operation, and give a brief overview of the inversion-based feed forward control techniques developed in our group for high-speed SPM operation. The second half of the talk will present two recently developed control techniques in details: one is the robust-inversion technique that systematically integrates the inverse feed forward control with the robust feedback control. The second is the nanoscale broad-band viscoelasticity spectroscopy using model-less inversion-based iterative control technique.
