Abstract: In this presentation I shall introduce our Institute (IPT, 光電工程研究所) and the research my colleagues and I are doing in the institute. This includes four major areas: silicon photonics, quantum photonics, green photonics, and soft matter photonics. I shall go into some detail of my own research work, which includes development and application of pulsed tunable optical parametric oscillators, and more recently optical waveform synthesis.

Dr. Andy Kung obtained his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1973 from Stanford University.  He joined the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory of the University of California as a staff scientist in 1975, and was a senior staff scientist at LBL when he left to become a research fellow at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan in 1994. In 2009 he transferred to the National Tsing Hua University to become the director of the Institute of Photonics and Technologies.
Dr. Kung’s research is focused on developing solid state tunable laser systems and to explore applications with these light sources. His current research interests are in developing ultrafast science and technology using molecular modulation in hydrogen.
Dr. Kung is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the Optical Society of America, a life member of the Overseas Chinese Physicists Association, and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of the United States of America.  He is a three time recipient of the Outstanding Scholars Award of the Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship in Taiwan.
